Orientation

Family Orientation is designed to continue introducing parents and family members to New Mexico State University and our resources offered to help support your student’s transition. During our Freshman Two-Day programs, we offer a simultaneous program that takes place for family members. Upon arrival, students and families will be directed to separate check-in stations and will reconnect periodically throughout the first day of the program. The second day of the program for families consists of showcasing different features and resources on campus, as well as an opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Las Cruces. Families and students will not reconnect until the end of the day your student has completed their program.

Family orientation is offered during our transfer orientation programs as well and provides highlights about New Mexico State University and how your student’s transition here may be different from their previous college or university. Family orientation for transfer students is a one-day program with a combination of sessions with your student, as well as family only programming.

During both Family Orientation Programs, family members will learn about the transition to college and campus resources available for their students. Families will have an opportunity to engage with current students, as well as gain an administrative perspective from university faculty and staff. This is a prime opportunity to meet with other family members and NMSU representatives!

Our goal is to have you go home feeling more connected to the university and equipped with tools to connect more deeply with your student as they prepare to transition to NMSU.

Orientation Accommodations

Students are required to stay overnight in an NMSU residence hall during their one-night stay at orientation. If your student has a medical excuse or extreme circumstance that prevents them from being able to stay on campus, they will need to contact us as soon as possible so that can approve this and/or make accommodations.

Family members that are coming from out-of-town have the option of staying at local hotels that offer discounted pricing for guests of NMSU. For a full list of participating hotels and more information about Las Cruces, the AWO Staying Overnight page will provide you more details about the area.
