Message from the President

Garrey Carruthers

Garrey Carruthers, Ph.D.
President, New Mexico State University

Welcome to New Mexico State University! NMSU is all about discovery. It’s a place where our students find themselves – who they are and what they want to do with their lives.

At NMSU, your student will meet some of the finest professors, who are at the heart of our caring community. These faculty members will help your student prepare for a great career in almost any field. Our graduates are sought after by recruiters and prove the value of their education in the workplace.

Of course, many of the great experiences your student will have as an Aggie will be out of the classroom. Our students contribute to the extensive research that we are known for, and these experiences help students make important decisions about graduate school and careers. This is also the perfect place for your student to learn about government through ASNMSU and to join other campus organizations. And who knows? Student leaders of today can even go on to become the governor of a great state!

As parents and family members of NMSU students, you should know about all the services and opportunities we can offer your student. I recommend that you and your student take some time to look through the NMSU website—there’s a lot to know about the programs and services we offer to help your student to be successful. The links on the right of this page are a good place to start. You may also want to sign up for the Family Email List, which will help you keep up with information about events and NMSU offices.

I can tell you first-hand about the outstanding opportunities this great university can open up for our graduates. I came here as a student from Aztec, New Mexico, and returned here as a faculty member in 1968. The educational foundation NMSU gave me has taken me from serving as a White House Fellow to New Mexico’s Roundhouse as the 27th governor. I came back to NMSU as dean of the College of Business and later became the university’s 27th president in 2013.

We share the same goal of watching your student cross the stage at graduation. At the beginning of each academic year, I challenge our new students to graduate by giving them a gold challenge coin. The coin serves as a symbol to continue to discover, learn, overcome challenges and succeed! Let me know how we can help your student achieve success at NMSU.

NMSU…It’s all about discovery.
